Cinnamon & Oak is a legendary Movember team made up of friends having fun while doing good. Our annual member profiles showcase our merry collection of Mo Bros & Mo Sistas. Today we’re featuring C&O team member Aaron Moguin from Vancouver, BC.
This is Aaron in 10 sentences:
What has been your proudest moment so far this year?
It’s not really a moment, but I have over the last 11 months engineered a pretty significant career shift from land development & urban design to managing a proptech startup. That we have made it this far and have some pretty good prospects on the near horizon I count as a success, and feel pretty chuffed about it!
What do you do for a living?
I run the above proptech platform, landano.io – we provide a land administration platform for small governments and individuals that provides property documentation security as well, expanding access to such services to areas that have found providing or using this service challenging in the past. Currently, this means Ghana and Mozambique.
What do you do for fun?
I ski tour; I go on long bike rides; I design and build unnecessarily complicated furniture; I cook delicious food, usually over an open fire; and through repeated experimentation, I seek to create the most delicious condiment I have ever tasted.
What’s the most important thing you do daily when you wake up?
Immediately make a batch of my favourite coffee of all time, Pallet’s Kindeng Dry Mill natural-process, from Papua New Guinea. The absolute archetype of a small luxury!
Why is Movember important to you?
Building honest brotherhood with guys both inside and outside my typical network or group is fantastic; also, my own father ended his life at 49, shocking most people who knew him, so helping mens’ health topics be easier to talk about is a goal that really hits home for me.
The three people outside of your family and friends who you’d love to host for dinner.
Larry Beasley, the former head planner of Vancouver and my all-time mentor; Heston Blumenthal, the most performative and creative chef I’m aware of; and Prince – this would be an incredible conversation and whatever happened after dinner would be legendary.
What is a current favourite piece of media?
CBC’s Coroner is an absolute banger of a police/crime/medical procedural that is so curious and different than anything else in its category – it’s like a magical-realist tour of all the most fascinating aspects of Toronto society and geography (yes, there are many).
What’s a quote you’ve been thinking about recently?
“What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.”
What have you done this year to improve your mental health?
Simply surviving multiple tests and coming out better for it – see above idiom.
Where is the best place for team members to connect with you?
