Cinnamon & Oak is a legendary Movember team made up of friends having fun while doing good. Our annual member profiles showcase our merry collection of Mo Bros & Mo Sistas. Today we’re featuring C&O team member Devon Carr from Vancouver, BC.
Looking back on this year, what achievement or experience are you most proud of?
The most profound experience I had this year was holding my Mom's hand as she went through with MAiD. Dignity in death has always been something I supported but going through it in such a personal way brought a whole new perspective on life, and the transformative aspects of grief, and why agency is so powerful in our lives.
How would you describe your day-to-day work?
No two days are alike. I'm a man of many, many hats, but one of those is making art and wielding a camera.
Is there a ritual or habit that sets a positive tone for your day?
I have a few of those, but it all starts with waking up appreciative of the good life I have and a few really stellar humans I get to share it with, especially the one I wake up next to.
When you want to unwind, what do you turn to?
When I'm struggling, I need a lot of physical effort to clear my head but when I'm good, I lean towards making a meal and spending time with my lovely partner. It's a priority for me to sail a pretty even-keeled course in life.
What makes Movember meaningful to you?
Movember is a way to start a conversation. That conversation could be just a fleeting chat or a real shift in someone's trajectory.
If you could host three people (historical or contemporary, anyone!), who would be at your table?
My grandfather. He was my highwater mark for what a good man could be, a great cook, and a consummate host.
Anthony Bourdain. Irreverence and a deep appreciation for simple pleasures would make for a great meal with that fellow.
Someone from the future. I'd love a peek at where the story goes...
What’s a book, show, or podcast that’s captured your interest lately?
I had a conversation today with a stranger about equestrian therapy. Apparently the whole deal is that you can't fake things with animals so they either come to you because you're grounded and at peace or they don't, because you're not...
Is there a quote or idea that’s been resonating with you?
None of this is permanent.
What steps have you taken this year to support your mental wellness?
Time. to be still. for Therapy. for the important conversations and some that aren't "important" but really, really are. to be creative. to moving in the woods. and in the water. for the people I love. Giving time to the things that matter.
What’s the best way for others in the group to connect with you?
