Andrew McGuire is finding meaning in a year of early mornings and milestones
“Don’t let your dreams be dreams.”
Cinnamon & Oak is a legendary Movember team made up of friends having fun while doing good. Our annual member profiles showcase our merry collection of Mo Bros & Mo Sistas. Today we’re featuring C&O team member Andrew McGuire from Brockville, ON.
Looking back on this year, what achievement or experience are you most proud of?
It was a big year for us actually! We welcomed our little girl Sophie in July, I finished my last fellowship, started a new job in Brockville, and finished my master’s.
How would you describe your day-to-day work?
Right now I’m working at the Brockville General Hospital, specializing in Sports Medicine and Knee Reconstruction.
Is there a ritual or habit that sets a positive tone for your day?
Most mornings my little dude wakes up early, so I give him a book to read in bed before his mom wakes up, and I get ready for work. So I can just sit outside his room and listen to him “read to himself” while having a coffee. It’s a pretty cute way to start the day.
What makes Movember meaningful to you?
This year is especially meaningful for me, as my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
When you want to unwind, what do you turn to?
If I can find a way to sneak off to the course for a round I’ll do that, otherwise, I’m trying to get up to the lake and on the boat as much as possible!
If you could host three people (historical or contemporary, anyone!), who would be at your table?
Walter Gretzky, Muhammad Ali, Mike Weir
What’s a book, show, or podcast that’s captured your interest lately?
Most of my time is spent listening to the American Arthroscopy Association podcast, which has a pretty niche audience.
Is there a quote or idea that’s been resonating with you?
“Don’t let your dreams be dreams.”
What steps have you taken this year to support your mental wellness?
I’m trying to work on my physical health as a first step, it’s been a little while! I’m certainly not the athlete I used to be, but I’m also learning that sacrificing an hour in the gym for an hour of Legos is worth it.
What’s the best way for others in the group to connect with you?
Shoot me a message any time. If say call me, but I’m trapped in the hospital most of the time – 226.919.5177
